GLOBAL MINI-JAM

Following the AAPBS May 2019 business education mini-jam in Japan, a global jam was held in Boston University on 11-12 November 2019 sponsored by AACSB and EFMD: http://questromworld.bu.edu/businesseducationjam/ Participants from jams held on all continents with business schools were represented in Boston. Discussions focused on heterogeneity, developing communities of practice (tribes) that reflect local values, challenge-based, ethical, experiential and collaborative learning, and learning from failure. We reflected on the need for business schools to be more inclusive in terms of stakeholders and the curriculum and to work with unusual suspects in shaping our societal value proposition. As a result of the mini-jams, regional networks have been established, for example in Latin America. A key output from the Boston University global jam at Questrom School of Business will be another major project on the future of business and management education.

THE QUALITY ENHANCEMENT SESSION DURING THE AAPBS ANNUAL MEETING 2019

BY EILEEN PEACOCK

In November 2019 at the AAPBS Annual meeting AAPBS inititated a new activity.  The activity was designed is initiating a new activity to assist in identifying quality improvement ideas through developing thought partnership conversations with business school members.  Eileen Peacock offered to meet with schools at a pre-appointed time to collaboratively address problems/issues raised by schools individually, and using collective wisdom through consultation to address possible pathways and solutions. A full afternoon, at a time when conferences sessions were not in play, was set aside for the meetings. The idea evolved from the concept of thought partnership:

Thought partnership is the practice of sharing ideas and experience with others to help them navigate complex challenges. This sounds a lotlike advice or mentorship, but the key difference is that thought partnership is always mutually beneficial ..thought partnership is almost always about problem solving or exploring something of mutual interest  https://www.causeit.org/being-a-thought-partner

The response to a call of interest for this activity was significant and the afternoon was filled.  Schools at different levels of maturity, status, size signed up to have a conversation. Issues discussed ranged from assistance with discussions of faculty qualifications and achievements, what to do to be really ready to discuss quality assurance issues with peers, and how schools can find a pathway, or pathways to excellence through improving processes.

All the conversations were very interactive and Indeed all partners in the conversations gained from the event. A good time was had by all!

The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has unanimously approved the appointment of Prof. Lin Zhou as new Dean of CUHK Business School for five years, targeted to start from December 2019.
