A sun sets in Japan with the passing of Dr. Hiroshi Kurimoto, Chancellor of Nagoya University of Commerce and Business

After a lifetime of devoting tireless efforts to the advancement of higher education at private universities, Chancellor of Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Dr. Hiroshi Kurimoto passed away on Wednesday, May 6th, 2020 at the age of 85, ending his 6-year battle against cancer.

Chancellor Hiroshi Kurimoto followed closely in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Yuichi Kurimoto, who founded the Kurimoto Educational Institute in 1935 after returning home as the first Japanese student to graduate from the University of Alberta in Canada, imbuing him with a quality that he called Frontier Spirit.

"Frontier Spirit means to dream and to achieve the dream...Without dreaming, nothing is achieved," said Chancellor Hiroshi in a 2006 article about his fathers vision that was published by Folio, the brand journalism site of the University of Alberta.

Chancellor Hiroshis dreams can be traced in his accomplishments; amongst many accolades, he was decorated with the Third Class of the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of his staunch promotion of private universities in Japan, and a blue-ribbon Medal of Honor from the Cabinet Office of Japan for prosperous efforts in the areas of public welfare and education.

But titles and awards alone cannot capture the essence of a man who began his acquaintance with the inner workings of academia from the age of 15, under his fathers guidance; who, in 1983, spearheaded the first campaign in Japan to provide students with their own personal computers; and who, even in his final hours, sought to ensure that courses being conducted online in the wake of COVID-19 were meeting his standards of quality.

In a message to the faculty and administration of the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Undergraduate School and the Graduate School of Management, NUCB Business School, newly-appointed Chancellor Hiroyuki Kurimoto affirmed his commitment to the dreams of his father and grandfather and set his sights on his own frontier, 2023: the 70th anniversary of the Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration, in which he envisions a celebration of continued achievement honoring their memory.

Owing to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, a funeral ceremony was held for immediate family members only. The family plans to hold a memorial farewell ceremony for Chancellor Hiroshi Kurimoto open to friends, colleagues, and well-wishers on October 7, 2020.
